When October means September June 22, 2006
Posted by Duncan Brook in : Fight cancer , add a commentIt turns out the “October” administration of the LSAT takes place on September 30, the day of the General Smallwood Triathlon. I really had no choice but to bump myself up to the Chicago triathlon, which means I’m going from a nice, local, small, approachable triathlon for my first-ever to the biggest triathlon in the world (7,500 racers), which takes place a month earlier and gives me that much less training and fundraising time. Great. That’s hot!
My injury is almost all better — in that it’s only a faraway twinge every so often — but I’m very, very afraid to run on it before my orthotics come in. I would hate to re-injure myself after waiting patiently for so long. My inserts should be ready any day now, and I’m eager to get back out there.
My swimming is definitely, definitely coming along. I taught myself sidestroke and am now comfortable enough breathing and everything in the water that I’m working on bilateral breathing and really keeping my head down. I find if I put my chin almost to my chest, everything just pops up in the water, and all of a sudden I’m gliding along effortlessly. So the progress is very encouraging, but I still have a long ways to go.
Especially now that I suddenly have a month less to train! And a month less to raise more money! Ahh!

Posted by Duncan Brook in : Fight cancer , add a commentI finally saw a foot/ankle specialist this week, and I turn out to have a neuroma, which is an inflamed nerve in the forefoot that sends sharp electric shocks shooting up my toe. I’m having an orthotic insert made that will relieve the pressure, which will be ready in a couple of weeks, and the pain has actually slowly been going away by itself. I will likely give it a few more days and then very, very gingerly see if I can jog in my new running shoes without the insert. My priority will be to avoid reinjury, but despite all the delays, I’m pleased to have a course of treatment. Now if only my insurance actually covered the orthotic…

You guys are awesome. Remember what I said about calling me for questions and advice about the test and the college application process — I want to hear how you’re doing. I believe you can all do great things, and I’d like to keep helping you get there.
