But my pudge keeps me warm… October 7, 2006
Posted by Duncan Brook in : Fight cancer , add a commentSince my century ride almost a month ago, I’ve been pushing myself hard, really, really hard … to see how little I can exercise and how much I can eat. Even as I’ve eased off the training accelerator, my appetite has stayed at full throttle. It’s been great!
Now, though, it’s time for my extended rest-and-recovery period to wrap up. Every year, I struggle to stay in shape over the winter because I can’t bring myself to ride in the cold — I instinctually prefer to batten down the hatches, plump up a bit, and stay warm. All well and good, except that each spring season, I then have to plow through the accumulated detritus of my winter downtime. It takes me half the warm months to get myself back up to speed, and that’s just silly. I shouldn’t be playing catch-up every year; I should be building from year to year.
My post-race rest was just what I needed, and now it’s time to hit the weights to build power, to buy warm cycling clothes to keep my legs strong during the cold months, and to keep trekking daily to the local pool — no matter the gloomy weather outside. Oh, and I guess I should run too. I hate running.
It’s gonna be … great?
