Back in the saddle April 24, 2007
Posted by Duncan Brook in : Fight cancer , 1 comment so farUntil today, I’d hit the bike exactly three times over the last seven months — two windy 20-mile spins around Hains Point and a quick 15-mile ride to Old Town and back on the Mt. Vernon trail. Today, I headed in the opposite direction on the W&OD Trail, overheated like crazy in the sun, and had to choose between vomiting and chillaxing in the shade for ten minutes. I made the non-regurgitation choice. Suffice to say, I am crazy-out-of-cycling-shape.
In theory, one is supposed to spend the winter building up strength to be all strong for the actual season. Every year, however, I spend the winter huddled under as many layers of warmth as I can find — including a warm veneer of winter fat that I hoard and accumulate purposefully. Now that happy, sunny weather has returned, I’m a totally different person: healthier and more prone to wheeeeee! moments. Unfortunately, I also have a long way to go before I’ll be able to ride another century and (maybe) race another triathlon this year.
In other news, I once again shaved my legs to reflect my returned I’m-an-actual-cyclist-ness. Man do I have a ton of real estate down there… My pants feel cold…
So … Duncan is pleased to be back in the saddle again. In just a few months, I hope to be leannmeanntannbuff (nshaved) once more for the 100-mile Philly Livestrong Challenge — to benefit the fight against cancer — and I hope you’ll follow my progress between now and then.
